Delaware boasts a financially solid and diverse business economy with a concentration of companies in the automobile, chemistry, financial services and insurance, life science and biotech, tourism, agriculture, and corporate legal services markets.

Delaware maintains an AAA bond rating from all three major Wall Street bond rating agencies, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce ranked Delaware first in providing a legal climate that attracts businesses.

The state's agricultural roots also run deep. In addition to a thriving poultry industry and cash crops including corn and soybeans, agriculture is closely tied with one of the fastest growing areas of the new economy--biotechnology. The region is home to more than 100 bioscience companies, including industry leaders such as Agilent Technologies, AstraZeneca, DuPont, Dade Behring, W.L. Gore and Associates, Schering-Plough Corporation, and Syngenta.

Thanks to the Financial Center Development Act, Delaware has one of the largest concentrations of banking operations in the Mid-Atlantic region. Among these institutions are Bank of America, Bank One Delaware, and Discover Bank, three of the country's largest credit card banks, as well as ING DIRECT and Juniper Bank, pioneers of online banking.

Because Delaware's diverse industry base depends heavily on information technology, it is not surprising that the state has also become a breeding ground for new IT businesses. Entrepreneurial Hot Spots identified Delaware as ranking seventh for an entrepreneurial environment.
