Israeli Ambassador to U.S. will address leaders in Delaware during World Trade Week
-- Gov. Carper forged relationship when he led trade mission to Israel last summer --

Wilmington - His Excellency David Ivry, Ambassador of Israel to the United States, will speak about the new trade relationships forged between Delaware and Israel, highlighting the importance of international trade at a luncheon hosted by Governor Thomas R. Carper to mark World Trade Week.

Last July, Governor Carper led a trade mission to Israel in an effort to begin forging lasting business, education, and cultural relationships. Besides the State of Delaware and Israel being similar in size, Israel and Delaware have similar business environments, specifically in the high technology sector. As a result, the Delaware Economic Development Office (DEDO) has made forging new partnerships with Israel one of its primary international economic development strategies.

The World Trade Week luncheon takes place at noon on Wednesday, May 24, 2000 at the Wilmington Country Club, and reservations are still being accepted ($35 covers the cost of the lunch. Checks can be made payable to the Delaware Economic Development Office.).

Authorized by the President of the United States and organized by the U.S. Department of Commerce, World Trade Week seeks to emphasize the importance of U.S. international trade, as well as its importance to the states. For example, in 1999, the value of exports by Delaware companies was $5.2 billion, or over 15% of the state's total value of goods and services (1999 Gross State Product was $31.5 billion).

In addition, Governor Carper will present the 2000 Governor's Outstanding Exporter Award to one of Delaware's successful international trade businesses. The Governor's Exporter awards typically recognize businesses in three industry sectors: agriculture, manufacturing and service. Companies that have been recognized in the past include Perdue Farms Incorporated; T.W. Murray, Dover; and Aircrafters, Inc., Wilmington.

The luncheon is open to the public. For additional information, contact Anna White at the Delaware Economic Development Office (302) 577-8477.
