Kirkwood U.S. Army Reserve Center Closing
Public Outreach Period Ends September 8

WILMINGTON - On June 8, 2006, the Delaware Redevelopment Authority (DRA) began community outreach to the individuals and organizations with an interest in the future of the Kirkwood Army Reserve Center. This military center, located on the north side of Kirkwood Highway at Route 7, is slated to close within five years. The DRA is following a process put forth by the federal government to recommend a plan to reuse this property in a way that is consistent with community interests and needs. The goal is to bring about orderly and lasting change in the community.

Since June, the Delaware Redevelopment Authority has held two public meetings and a public facility tour, as well as an outreach campaign through local media and letters to the community. These actions have been critical to educate the public about the particulars of this base closing and to listen to community concerns and recommendations. The DRA is also currently soliciting Notices of Interest to reuse this federal surplus property from State and local governments, representatives of the homeless and other interested parties.

In accordance with federal law, the public outreach period runs until September 8, 2006. Those wishing to submit comments or a Notice of Interest should do so in writing before 5:00 p.m. on September 8, 2006. Individuals seeking to learn more about the Delaware Redevelopment Authority and the federal requirements for submitting Notices of Interest may visit: /army_reserve_center/ArmyReserveCenter.shtml.

Submissions should be directed to:

Created by Governor Minner through Executive Order #85, the Delaware Redevelopment Authority is recognized by the Secretary of Defense as the entity responsible for the preparation of a base redevelopment plan. The Delaware Redevelopment Authority concludes its work in June 2007 when it presents its plan to the US Army and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
